Fu registrata il 15 e 16 giugno dello stesso anno negli studi di Tom Wilson e fu pubblicata su un 45 giri il 20 luglio con la collaborazione della sua band, formata da Mike Bloomfield (chitarra), Al Kooper (organo), Paul Griffin (piano), Russ Savakus (basso) e Bobby Gregg. Sebbene il brano fosse molto lungo fu il più grande successo di Bob Dylan, visto che rimase per ben tre mesi nelle classifiche statunitensi, battuto in seguito solo da Help! dei Beatles.
